Literacy
Our goals of the After School Literacy program are to help students develop their reading skills and competencies; develop their motivation to read and enjoyment of reading good literature; develop their capacities to think criti- cally and express their ideas and feelings about important issues; and increase their understanding of themselves, their peers, and others, and to make better choices related to their own lives. Our language arts curriculum purposefully and specifically targets the areas of motivation, vocabulary development, background knowledge, critical thinking skills, and quantity of reading with the following pedagogical strategies: reading aloud, vocabulary words, connections to life experiences to build motivation, discussions that build critical thinking and verbal expression skills, time for reading to promote fluency, an inclusive, caring environment that supports learning, and support for English Language Learners and students with disabilities.
Mathematics
Our goals for the After School Math program are to build students’ mathe- matics skills and understanding of number, measurement, and geometry concepts; increase their opportunities to explore mathematics with adults and peers in a supportive, collaborative environment; and foster their social development, particularly their abilities to be responsible, make decisions, give and get help, and collaborate and communicate with others.
